All Aubrey Organics products carry the "leaping bunny" logo, the internationally recognized symbol for "cruelty free" cosmetics. Established by the Coalition for Consumer Information in Cosmetics (CCIC), a group of eight national animal protection organizations, the leaping bunny represents a single, comprehensive standard. Whenever you see this logo, you can be sure neither the product, nor any of its ingredients has been tested on animals.
For more than 40 years, Aubrey has been a vocal opponent of animal testing. Aubrey have never tested on animals, and they never will.
All Aubrey Organics are 100% natural and nearly all products are vegan. The vegan logo indicates no animal-derived ingredients.
As early as 1976, the European Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery
Association saw the need to develop industry standards for the testing
and labeling of sun care products. Their objective has been to simplify
the labeling system, improve testing methods, and provide clear
information to the consumer.
Although SPF is mainly an indicator of protection against UVB rays,
the European commission determined that protection from UVA rays,
which can cause wrinkling, hyperpigmentation (sun spots) and other
signs of premature aging, should be factored in when evaluating a
sunscreen’s ability to adequately protect the skin.
To ensure safety and efficacy, the commission has established the ratio
of UVA protection in a sunscreen should be at least 1/3 of the UVB
sun protection factor. Sunscreens that display the symbol pictured
above meet or exceed these standards.
You may already be aware that certain ingredients commonly found in sunscreens are causing irreparable damage to coral reefs worldwide. Four to six thousand tons of sunscreen wash off swimmers each year, and studies have shown synthetic chemicals carried by the waves are destroying algae and other marine life within the reefs.
One casualty of this chemical onslaught is zooxanthellae, algae that give coral its vibrant color and provide reefs with essential nutrients. Without these algae hosts, the reefs lose their color, are bleached white, and quickly die.
Aubrey deemed reef safe by National Geographic
In a subsequent article in their June/July 2008 issue, National Geographic singled out Aubrey’s Natural Sun sunscreens as reef safe products that deliver sun protection without causing harm to marine life:
“Sunscreen may spare your skin, but when it inevitably rinses off in the waves, it’s an eco-nightmare. Up to 6,000 tons of the goop end up in oceans every year… and the chemicals are bleaching the reefs at an alarming rate. Two Mexican marine parks have banned traditional sunscreens, and more are sure to follow suit. Aubrey Organics Natural Sun is a bit pricey [compared to drug store brands] (and smells like a White Russian), but delivers where it counts: It protects your skin from rays as well as other screens—and saves reefs from a total wipeout.”
Sodium Laureth/Lauryl sulphate (SLES/SLS) are used to strip grease from hair and make shampoo spread out and penetrate. It enters the skin very easily and remains in tissues (especially brain, heart and liver tissues) for a relatively long time. Used in 90 per cent of all commercial shampoos. SLS has been prohibited in bubble baths because it has adverse effects on skin protection and causes rashes and irritation. It has a multitude of negative health effects from built up in lymphs, to associations with cancer, eye damage, endocrine disruption, hair loss and dry skin.
NSF/ANSI 305 is a third-party regulatory standard for organic personal care products. In order to meet the standard and make the "contains organic ingredients" claim, the product must contain 70% or more certified organic ingredients by weight, and meet all other NSF/ANSI guidelines. Production methods are also routinely audited by QAI (Quality Assurance International) auditors who tour the facilities and ensure that all processes meet the required standards. Aubrey sells an extensive list of products that meet the NSF/ANSI 305 organic certification, all of which are clearly marked with the seal.
A number of Aubrey products have been certified organic by the USDA National Organic Program, and carry the USDA Organic seal. Aubrey is committed to using as many organic ingredients as possible in our natural products.
In 1994 Aubrey Organics became the first personal care company to be certified as an organic processor by Quality Assurance International of San Diego, CA. Our Tampa, Florida, manufacturing plant is regularly inspected and has been certified as a facility where organic ingredient are handled to US Dept. of Agriculture's National Organic Program standards.
We're committed to using premium natural and organic ingredients and the list of certified organic herbs and plant extracts you'll find in our products keeps growing. We believe this is the best way to tell our customers just how natural we really are.
Aubrey Organics was the first natural cosmetic manufacturer to have a complete makeup line certified by the National Products Association (NPA). In 2008, the NPA established the first and only national standard for natural personal care products. The NPA certification and official seal are awarded to personal care products that meet their strict definition of natural, and are designed to help consumers identify truly natural products and make an informed decision.
Founded in 1936, the NPA is the largest non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to the natural products industry.
In 2004 Aubrey Organics became the first U.S. company to bear the BDIH Certified Natural Cosmetics seal. BDIH stands for Germany's prestigious Federation of German Industries and Trading Firms for Medicines, Natural Products, Food Supplements and Body Care (Bundesverband Deutscher Industrie und Handelsunternehmen fur Arzneimittel, Reformwaren, Nahrungserganzungsmittel und Korperpflege, or BDIH in German).
Based in Mannheim, Germany, the BDIH Certified Natural Cosmetic seal was created in 1996 to establish strict guidelines for the manufacture of natural cosmetics. Only companies using the finest, plant-based ingredients and ecologically responsible manufacturing practices can be BDIH certified. Aubrey Organics is proud to display the BDIH Certified Natural Cosmetic seal in its European labels.
